Another name of the Chinese culture, Hwa Hia, is said to allude to the splendor of clothing and the greatness of rites. This association goes back thousands of years and embodies an important connection between the cultural symbols and philosophical values of China.
漢服 / Hanfu refers to the traditional clothes of Han Ethnicity (the majority ethnicity of China). Despite having a history as long as almost 4000 years, it was banned during Qing Dynasty as a part of a series of restrictive cultural policies aimed to obliterate ethnic identities. The policy greatly hurt clothing diversity in China and Hanfu was almost extinct for the next 300 years. Meanwhile, the new uniformly dictated clothing style, largely based on traditional Manchu design, became the image of China and has been known as "Mandarin coat" (e.g. qipao, magua, etc.)
Our mission is to promote Hanfu knowledge, reintroduce its usage - both daily and festive, and help build a more comprehensive and accurate representation of the diverse and beautiful clothing traditions of China.
We also explore Hanfu's value in community building and as a gateway to the rest of the traditional Han cultural practices.
